The problem: Incarceration rates in the US have increased over 500% in the past 40 years. More than alf of state and federal inmates have children under the age of 18, resulting in 2.7 million minor children (1 in 28) with an incarcerated parent; 25% of them are under the age of 4 and some are newborns. The consequences: What happens to all these children? Many of them end up traumatized and suffering, and often land up in the juvenile justice system themselves. What happens to their parents? Many give up on parenting, at a time when their children need them the most. The solution: This course informs the issues surrounding this problem and inspires solutions.
