Course Description

In this class, students will engage in a series of design challenges using a range of materials and limitations with the end goal of creating these designs in sheet metal and metal rod. Through a range of different materials, measuring and layout tools and rapid iteration students will discover their own path through the design process, all documented in a personal design sketchbook. These design challenges are not just focused aesthetics. We will examine conceptual elements such as narrative, sign/symbol relationships and ergonomics related to the functionality of an object. Students will produce one lidded box, one piece of jewelry and one maquette for a monumental sculpture.

Notes

Any necessary materials for the workshop will be communicated to enrolled students by the instructor in advance or covered in the first class.
