Course Description

This class is for students who wish to combine structure with experimentation. A series of weekly projects will give students a framework to explore new concepts and techniques in mixed media. Projects will include mapping personal space, abstracting self portraits, exploring family myth, charting migration, and creating body maps. These projects will give students ideas and inspiration to focus on developing their own personal imagery. As the class progresses, each student will focus on one project that they wish to pursue for the final third of the class. Students will learn new techniques with combinations of mixed media on a variety of surfaces. Media will include ink, acrylic ink, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, drawing materials, and collage on papers, mylar, and boards. Weekly class discussions and critiques will give students feedback on work made each week inside and outside of class time. Trips to galleries and studios as well as in class visual presentations of artists are an integral part of the course.
